Community or Enterprise: a three-year cost model
Community has no licence fee. It also has no upgrade service, no official Saudi localization and no vendor to call at 11pm. Here is how to price that difference instead of arguing about it.
The question is asked as if it were about money, but it is really about who carries the maintenance. Enterprise moves that burden to Odoo for a monthly fee. Community leaves it with you, and you pay it in consultant hours instead of licence fees. Both are legitimate answers — the mistake is choosing without pricing the second column.
What Community genuinely gives you
A complete, open-source ERP with sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, projects, CRM and a website builder. It is not a demo or a crippled trial — plenty of serious companies run on it. Basic accounting exists through community modules maintained by the OCA and other contributors.
What it quietly transfers to you
- Version upgrades. Odoo's official upgrade service covers Enterprise databases. On Community you pay a partner for every migration — plan 40 to 100 hours each time, every one to three years.
- Saudi localization. The official ZATCA and VAT localization ships with Enterprise. On Community you rely on third-party modules or custom work, and you re-verify them every time the regulation moves.
- Studio. Without it, every small field or view change is a developer ticket rather than a fifteen-minute configuration by your own admin.
- Module maintenance. Community modules are volunteer-maintained. When one is abandoned before the next version, somebody has to adopt or replace it — and that somebody is billing you.

A rough rule from our projects: if accounting and compliance are central to what you are automating, Enterprise usually wins on three-year cost. If Odoo is running operations while accounting stays elsewhere, Community often does.
Three questions that decide it faster than the table
- Will you issue tax invoices from Odoo? If yes, lean Enterprise — the official localization is worth more than its price the first time a rule changes.
- Do you have, or will you hire, an in-house developer? Community without one is a dependency on a single external partner.
- How many staff need full accounts rather than portal or POS access? The licence maths changes completely at that answer.
